Subtle Changes

The gallery wall in our office is charming enough on it’s own as it is an eclectic collection of original pieces from various artists and friends … and/or friends who are artists.  Why “Yes” that IS a needlepoint of Chris Cornell stitched in chartreuse thread.

BeforeI, however, recently stumbled across this Etsy Shop and figured why not make that gallery wall even more fabulous…which I did with the purchase of a series of ornate frames and an equally ornate clock.  Taking the fab gallery wall to nothing short of uber-fab.

Valentines Day Again…Really?!

Sigh…Valentines Day…the day we are led to believe is THE day to share our love with loved ones. While I’m not anti-Valentines Day by any means, I just personally feel that your love for one another, be it a husband, boyfriend, or even your children, should be expressed everyday and not with a giant mylar balloon or velvet rose you nabbed from the corner gas station or from the dude on the side of the road because of the pressure you felt from St. Valentine.

Again, I am not at all anti-Valentines Day. In fact, I still have the Valentine my first love gave me. It didn’t come with a lot of fanfare … maybe a flower of some sort, that his mom undoubtedly bought … I don’t even remember … but it was the card with a little handwritten note inside that made it so special. That gesture alone meant more than anything. Because Valentine’s Day I think is about the gesture. It’s not about the expensive dinner out, or the ginormous bouquet of flowers your boyfriend had delivered because who really put thought into that … him … really? Is that what you think? No way, he scrolled through a gallery of arrangements and picked “just the right one”…he made reservations at a restaurant that everyone else did too…he went to the jewelry store at the mall and got what everyone else will be wearing.

Never in an effort to succumb to the pressure, and while I choose to not participate in the hoopla that comes with Valentines Day, I do share a little token with my loved one. I like to make my Valentines by hand. And not the lace doily kind, more like taping a match to a lil’ card and saying something like “you light my fire valentine”. Cliché perhaps, but handmade just the same.

This year, I purchased an awesome Secret Decoder Card on Etsy from They customize your message and include instructions on how to decode it. I couldn’t believe it took my guy almost the entire message to decode “Be Sure to Drink Your Ovaltine”.  You don’t need extravagance to show someone you love them, afterall, little things mean a lot!

People are Talking…Talking ’bout People

Ok, so the George Clooney Paperdoll started out as a joke.  I work in the movie biz and thought my crafty friends and family would get a kick out of it.  They did…but the more of them I made, the more the word spread, so I decided to put a few up in my Etsy shop.  George (as usual) is causing a stir…

Ms. Modern did a lovely little review of not only my Etsy shop, but George in particular over at her site Ms. Modern:

I found him at Film Experience Blogspot:

He was blogged over at Milano Cookie Aisle where somebody said something nasty about him…to which I respond “bite me”:

He’s linked here:

He’s buzzed about here:

He also recently made a guest appearance (as a giveaway) at “Screenwriter Karaoke” at Sardos in Burbank, and rumor has it the folks over at TMZ were buzzing about him.

The George Clooney Paperdoll is the perfect hostess gift for your Oscar Party.  George will come with not only an invitation to the Oscars, but  various interchangeable accoutrements, including, a bouquet of flowers, a cigar, a martini, a screenplay and an Oscar award, and all appropriately packaged in a popcorn container (envelope).  You can buy him in my Etsy Shop … and 20% of the proceeds will be contributed to George’s “Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief” through

Birthday Muse

Thankfully, every year, my friend Lara has a birthday.  It seems that every year I challenge myself to come up with something sassy to make for her and every year I spin off a business from it.

It all started a few years back when I made her a tank top with a little hand painted beaver on it.  She took one look at it and said “Why not Beaver Panties?” Fucking WHY NOT BEAVER PANTIES!  From that Beaver Bloomers were born.  I whipped up a prototype and a crude one page website and a week later I was poised on a red carpet promoting Beaver Bloomers for an Mtv3 show called “Karlifornia”.

From there Beaver Bloomers has gone on to be a proud sponsor of Phil Varone’s Sex Stand Up & Rock n’ Roll Show, as well as cover the bums of various celebrities in and around Hollywood.   You can find Beaver Bloomers at, or

Lucky for me, Lara continues to have birthdays!  This year, inspired by “what the shit fuck am I gonna make Lara”, I came up with “Twisted Mantras”.  Sort of a throwback to the days when we wrote “I will not chew gum in class” on the chalkboard, twisted mantras are edgier, more tongue-in-cheek, thoroughly updated.  I write my “mantras” in a spiral (twisted) pattern on vintage china and then heat infuse them for permanency.  They are affirmations of sorts such as “I am Not a Stalker” “I am Not OCD” “I am Not Obsessed” etc.  Then there are others that I just paint images on.  Twisted Mantras have been featured on and are for sale at

I look forward to celebrating Lara’s birthdays to come…for the obvious reasons, I like my friends to have birthdays…and I like that Lara challenges my creativity.  From hence forth, I will call her my Birthday Muse!

The Coveted Etsy Treasury

Etsy Treasuries are hard to come by.  When I first joined Etsy in early 2006, I was able to snag one but it took me till 2009 to figure out how to snag one again.  It’s a very strategic process.  But, luckily, has a Treasury Clock which counts down to the minute when a new Treasury will open on Etsy.  Now, I’m on the watch semi-daily for the elusive “Create a Treasury” button to magically appear when the lists drop just below the 333 mark (or in the Treasury West case just below the 222 mark).  But you have to be AT THE READY…with your theme, or at least a Title ready to go!!  I think very carefully about my theme name…you want something catchy enough to draw traffic to your Treasury…something sassy enough for other viewers to think “what magic could that Treasury possibly hold?”  I’ve come up with such gems as:

“Psycho Meets Vertigo (inspired by Alfred Hitchcock)”
“Alone But Not Lonely (Wandering But not Lost”) [song lyrics of mine]
“Bizarre Bazaar (a Hodge Podge of Pleasantries)”
“I’m Lost Behind (the words I cannot find)”  [lyrics from my favorite Chris Cornell song]
“Pink as the Bing on your Cherry (and pink cuz you are so very” [which was a collection of pink items for Breast Cancer Awareness month]

I mean I put a lot of thought into these…all in the hopes that I will be magically plucked out of a sea of “orange you glads” and “things that make you go hmmm” to be featured on the coveted Etsy front page.  I realize, however, that people are shocked and blindsided when the button actually appears and the Treasuries open!  I mean, 700 or more people are also at the ready and if you don’t cut n’ paste your well thought out theme title in immediately, you’re out, you’re done…you’re teensy tiny window to the secret Etsy Treasury portal has closed!  That, I imagine, is why you see many “…” and “no time”  titles to treasuries because the button appeared and many are caught like deer in headlights – “Holy Crap there’s the button”.  I also put thought into my second line, whereas many just leave it at the default “a few of my favorites”.  Once you get that main title in, you have PLENTY of time to edit the second line.  And I always tie in my second line to my main title.  I mean I like my entire Treasury to be a nice pretty package, with all the details sewn up.

I post my treasuries to Facebook and Tweet them and contact each Featured Seller to let them know they’ve been popped into a Treasury.  (Although, you can check at anytime on to see if your shop has been featured by someone in a Treasury).  I am also very strategic about my color choices, my treasury “collections”, often times building the entire treasury around a single favorite item.  Sometimes including “secret” messages via specially picked items for friends.

And yet, with all this strategy, all this clever planning, all this waiting, and all this maneuvering, I still can’t figure out how the hell to get people to look at my lovingly crafted Treasuries!  I try to come up with Treasury names and themes so clever I proudly think to myself, there’s NO WAY Etsy won’t think this is the greatest thing ever and immediately gank it for the front page.  Ahhhhh, but alas, Etsy has not, to date, done so.  And so I sit…and wait…for the “Treasury Open” button to appear…for Etsy to notice my artfully crafted Treasuries…
